Yesterday was the release of Global Top 100 Geospatial Companies – 2025 Edition. I mentioned this annual list in my end of year summary:
It is meaningful to me because when I was getting started building The Geospatial Index it was a large list of companies to trawl through looking for publicly traded ones:
I have created a workbook tracking this list year by year. It contains all companies, public and private, by year. It then shows only the public ones. Then a bar chart of companies by the number of years they’ve appeared in the list:
Something else to know is that 46 public companies in total have been listed across the 7 years the list has been running (2016, 2019, 2021-2025). Then another showing number of public companies by year:
Finally, what you’re really interested in, comparisons:
The first Geoawesome Top 100 was published November 2nd, 2016. That inception date applies to the first 5 records in the above table. You can see the performance of a portfolio made of the 12-20 public geospatial companies included in each of the 7 years. It is 10% per annum. This portfolio has unfortunately lost, however, to the market (S&P 500) and any version of my Geospatial Index. The market can be bought as one stock, such as the SPY exchange traded fund.
Then there is the comparison over the past year. The previous Geoawesome Top 100 list was released January 31st, 2024. So all numbers in the last 5 rows relate to this start date and a January 30th, 2025 end date. Here the panel included yours truly:
And we clocked a couple of wins: over the index and pureplay stocks of The Geospatial Index. Can’t ignore the fact though that the adjacent stocks had a romping year, outperforming the Top 100 by a full 6%.

THE GEOSPATIAL INDEX
The Geospatial Index is a comprehensive listing of all publicly traded geospatial businesses worldwide. Why? The industry is growing at ~5.4% annually (after inflation and after adjusting for base rates). This rate varies significantly, however, by sub index. For ~$400,000 to start, this growth rate is $5,000,000 over a working life. This channel, Bluesky account, newsletter, watchlist and podcast express the view that you are serious about geospatial if you take the view of an investor, venture capitalist or entrepreneur. You are expected to do your own research. This is not a replacement for that. This is not investment advice. Consider it entertainment.
